Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is a tropical fruit tree native to southern China and has been cultivated for over 2,000 years. It belongs to the Sapindaceae, or soapberry family, which also includes longan, rambutan, and ackee. The fruit is prized for its rough red rind, translucent white flesh, sweet floral flavor, and single large seed.
Lychee evolved as a flowering plant whose fleshy fruits attract animals such as birds and bats. These animals eat the fruit and disperse the seeds, helping lychee spread to new environments. This relationship between plants and animals is an example of coevolution, where different species influence each other’s evolution over time.
The evolutionary history of lychee stretches back billions of years to the origin of life on Earth. Through major evolutionary innovations—including the evolution of eukaryotic cells, photosynthesis, land plants, vascular tissues, seeds, flowers, and fruits—lychee eventually emerged as part of the Sapindaceae family. Its closest edible relative is longan (Dimocarpus longan), though it also shares ancestry with rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) and ackee (Blighia sapida).
Lychee exhibits remarkable natural variation. One famous example is seed-size variation, including “chicken-tongue” lychees, which have very small or aborted seeds and more edible flesh. These traits are heritable and arise from genetic differences among trees. Natural variation provides the raw material upon which evolution acts.
Humans have played an important role in shaping lychee evolution through artificial selection. For centuries, farmers have selected and propagated trees with desirable traits such as sweeter flavor, larger fruit, smaller seeds, brighter color, and thinner rinds. As a result, modern cultivated lychees differ significantly from their wild ancestors.
Today, lychee is grown throughout tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Beyond its delicious taste, lychee is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds, making it both an important crop and a fascinating example of evolution in action.
