Sadly we have become desensitized to the true consequences of war, numbed by its constant presence in our discourse. In the United States, we have largely lived within a protected and privileged sphere—an era of relative peace and prosperity that stands as a golden age in the broader sweep of human history. For most Americans, terrorism, war, and torture are distant realities—occurring in far-off lands and impacting lives we rarely see or understand.

With the exception of those who serve in the armed forces or related institutions, the vast majority of citizens have been spared the unspeakable traumas that accompany armed conflict. Perhaps it is time, then, to confront—however briefly—the agony endured by those less fortunate, and to witness the depths of inhumanity that war can unleash. The following videos are disturbing by design. They are intended to shock, because only through an unflinching reckoning with the cost of war can we begin to question its place in our world. In the words of Albert Einstein, war is indeed a "disgrace to civilization"—and it is only through understanding its true face that we might one day reject it more fully.
