During my undergraduate at Cal Poly Pomona I worked as an Outreach Assistant for the College of Engineering. Through this we would host events both for current students and well as K-12 students. These covered a wide range from tours, guest speaking, engineering activities, showcases, and training programs. As part of this I also worked for the Femineers program, Project Lead the Way, and judged robotics competitions.
The Femineers program brings stem education to K-12 students through a project-based three class opportunity. These consist of creative robotic diagrams, wearable electronics, and a pi robotics lesson. We hosted a teacher training were teachers would participate in the lessons themselves as we helped advise and debug any issues in Scratch, Arduino, or Python. This program culminated in a Femineers Summit every years where the girls would come to CPP to show off their work, tour the campus, and hear from students and professional engineers.
From being a Project Lead the Way student in high school myself, I then became an assistant for the program itself. As one of four universities that host this, every summer the K-12 teachers would enroll in teacher training programs to go through the curriculum. These training would last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks based on the class, with multiple sessions occurring throughout the summer. I helped to coordinate these trainings, assist the instructors, facilitate a smoothly running program. In addition to this, we would host informational sessions where I would speak about the impact PLTW had on my experience and try to convince more school districts to adopt it. My favorite part though was getting to show the students our labs when they would come to visit or getting to speak to them when I would visit them.
My involvement in robotic competitons was a always a highlight of my experience. I have be lucky to both judge and volunteer for the following opportunities:
Mini Rose Float Parade Competition hosted by CPP
Robot Rally Competitions for Lego Mindstorms
Sumo
Line Following
Obstacle
Vex Robotics and Vex IQ Competitions
