My name is Everett Pine. Kids at the library call me Mr. Everett. I have been working in libraries since 2014, but didn't discover my true career passion - Youth Services - until attending the ALA Annual Conference in 2018. Since then I was a Youth Services Librarian at small, medium, and large public libraries. I have been Head of Youth Services at Ferndale Area District Library since Spring 2022. Let me tell you why I love my career path so much.
I love planning storytimes because no one storytime is identical. In addition to promoting early literacy, I pick books and songs to match (and often encourage) the energy and engagement style of the kids. Naturally these change over time and so do my storytimes - in-person and virtual.
No one community is the same. What may work at one library, may not at another. As such I craft my programs based on recurrent and aspiring interests. I have had success with in-person programs about origami, zines, model Earths, escape rooms, flip books, shoebox foosball, DIY ice cream, family friendly trivia, and more.
Helping kids find books is more than just suggesting titles or locating books on the shelf. It's about having a conversation with them to really delve into what they're looking for and what they didn't expect to find, but are delighted to try out. Whether it's in-person, on the phone, or over email I strive to personalize the recommendation.
Managing collections is a great, seemingly behind the scenes, way of supporting storytimes, programming, and readers' advisory. I think it is important not only to weed damaged items and order new titles, but also to assess collections to provide inclusive and diverse materials. For example, I have created a popular Beginning Chapter Book collection with a keen eye on gaps in series and representation.
It's more than just the department I work in. No other job has brought me such professional and personal fulfillment. From the coworkers I get to collaborate with and staff I get to support to the families I grow to know, I find that my job contributes to my happiness. I feel fortunate to have found a job I enjoy this much.
