Maria Martinez is a mother of four. A 22 year old female, a 20 year old female, an 18 year old male, and a 15 year old female. Maria works full-time and takes care of a family of 5. When she was young she was left to fend for herself and her family. She lived on a ranch that was the equivalent of a desert and did not have much to work with. Her oldest sister raised her and the rest of the family the best she could when she was only 13 years old and continued to be a mother-like figure to her siblings for the next 10 years. Her older brothers would find a way to make it to the United States of America by the time they turned 14 and would find work at a very young age to be able to help their family back home in Mexico. They would find work anywhere they could by going to restaurants to wash dishes or clean anything they could to make some money. In Mexico, Maria had more freedom than when she migrated to the United States of America. She did not have to pay bills, partly because she was only there until the age of 15, but her family worked together on everything. They really tried their hardest to make ends meet and they somehow were able to. Maria was finally able to move to the United States and join her siblings in Illinois. They all went to the same high school and grouped together because they did not know many people. She worked very hard and spent hours doing homework and studying every single day. Maria ended up top 10% of her high school graduating class. She wanted to be a kindergarten teacher and aid other families in helping to control their children, but those plans sadly fell off.
As the transition happened, she realized that it was a totally different place and it would take time to adjust. At the time in Mexico it was a lot calmer and safer than the United States and now it is quite the opposite. Now she has to be very careful when visiting her hometown and when she is truly at home she does not have to worry as much and look both ways.
Maria didn't start working until the age of 25 because she was not legally able to work despite having the desire to work and help her family however she could. She worked extremely hard for roughly 5-10 years to be able to work and make money to support her growing family. For those 5-10 years she would help out her siblings around the house and take care of her nieces and nephews. She would also join her brother at his clothing store where the entire family would help out. Once Maria did start actually working, she was very frugal with her income and would only spend it when needed. She was able to save multiple checks at a time when she first started working and she would only spend money when her kids wanted toys or when they wanted to go out to eat with family members. When she would join her sister-in-laws and ride around the city with a bunch of children, they would want to eat at a restaurant and Maria and her sister-in-law would trade off when they would pay for the meals. So if Maria paid for the food this time, then her sister-in-law would pay next time, that way they both were able to save money and they would help each other out if they ever needed anything. Maria was not making much but used whatever she did make wisely. In Mexico she did not have to worry as much about bills and rent racking up as she did as soon as she moved to the U.S. Maria values money very highly because she knows that if she had a good amount of money then a lot of issues and worries would be relieved. She will not have to worry about the house that her and her family live in. She would not have to worry about bills and the food she will eat or have to prepare for the next day or even week. She will also be able to help her siblings and relieve them from their financial struggles which will make their life simpler in that aspect of life. If Maria has to sacrifice something on her end if it means that everyone around her will be happy then she will gladly do that without a doubt.
Maria does not have the best memory, not out of old age, she just forgets moments every now and then. One afternoon she drank a can of Coca Cola and put the empty can on the table. Later on in the day, her daughters were eating at the dinner table and she walks past the can and realizes that it is empty. She then screams at her kids about who drank her Coca Cola while also having dozens of cans in the refrigerator. One of her daughters points out that she drank and finished the can earlier in the day and she is going insane and they all end up burst out laughing and they continue to have a conversation about how they all have those moments and start making fun of each others. Maria also does not like it when someone she knows very well is not in the best position, whether it be financially or emotionally. If they are struggling financially or need anything, they know they can go to her and ask her for anything. On one occasion her good friend asked if she can borrow something for the day. Later that day her son asked about that item and was curious if they ever returned it and she said that they never did. She also said that they most likely lost the item and they don't know where they placed it. In that moment she realized that she is able to be too nice and generous at times, which can hurt her, but overall it is because she wants to see everybody succeed around her.
Maria does not want to see anybody down or near the bottom. If she can come from nothing and make something out of that she strongly believes that anybody can make something of themselves from any situation they are put in if they put their mind to it. Maria does the best she can to provide for her family financially by stretching her money to serve her best. She is the type of person that will do whatever she has to do to make somebody feel happy and feel like they have accomplished so much in their life. She wants the best for her kids and would love if they succeed and ultimately bring her along for the ride. She would love for her kids to do much better than what she has done given that they have more opportunities than her. Her children that she created are bilingual and are fluent in both languages which allow them to reach out to more people if they only knew Spanish or English. Maria attempts to always surround herself around positivity and great people to keep her in the right mood at all times. She is always trying to make everyone around better. She also realizes that if the people around her have large goals and aspirations then she will set big targets to aim for as well and they can all help each other to work towards objectives.
