The SIFT method is another tool used to evaluate online sources to determine their credibility and reliability. It helps in spotting fake news or misinformation often passed around on social media (Ruggeri, A., 2024). The SIFT method analyzes sources by stopping, investigating the source, finding better coverage, and tracing claims, quotes, and media to their original context (Kampen, K., 2025).
The SIFT method consists of four steps: stop, investigate the source, find better coverage, and trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context (Caulfield, M., 2024).
Stop - In this step, pause to consider the source. Is this article from a source I trust? How does it make me feel? What do I already have knowledge about on this topic? (Foertmeyer, A., 2025).
Investigate the source- For this step, investigate the site from which the article was published. Look at the about page and see if the site has a mission statement. Investigate the author to check their credibility (Foertmeyer, A., 2025).
Find better coverage- This step pertains to popular news coverage. When reading an article about news coverage, search for similar stories on other websites to verify that the information is fact-checked (Kampen, K., 2025).
Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original text. In this final step, it is encouraged to locate the original sources when information is referenced as a quote. This ensures the claim or quote is fairly represented, checking to see if the original claims match the information given, and ensures that information is not taken out of context and used with bias (Kampen, K., 2025).
