Practicalities
Who do you work with?
Undergraduates, graduates, PhD students, and young professionals, including those from non-STEM disciplines, typically aged 20–30. Anyone over 18 who is committed and motivated is welcome.
Recent clients (through a third-party non-profit) include a graduate brainstorming business ideas, and a candidate building self-esteem through factual accomplishments, moving from a year of unsuccessful interviews to positive feedback and two PhD offers. They are featured on my LinkedIn.
How do we work together?
In the initial session, you explain where you are at, explain short-term goals, or express aspirations. I ask about skills, experiences, education, job, and aspects you want to maintain or let go of. We determine whether there is a good fit, define the scope of the work and a course of action.
In the sessions we work through each objective, such as putting together a CV. We map out a pathway towards the long-term goals, for example landing a job. Each objective helps foster a vision. I help you build a to-do list, draw on my experience, share information, offer a new point of reference for decision-making, sharpen questions to clear up doubts, and highlight the bigger picture.
Your work between the sessions may be gathering information, submitting an application, meeting a challenge, achieving a goal, or stepping out of your comfort zone. Each step sets the agenda for the following session.
The relationship can extend beyond the sessions, for example, checking in with a former client and connecting him with a journal to become a reviewer.
What is included?
We focus on education and career, offered through coaching or mentoring, including hands-on support.
What is excluded?
Searching online, writing/proofreading/submitting documents, writing referrals/letters, and sending reminders. Note that sessions may involve reviewing documents.
Coaching and mentoring are neither therapy nor magic cures. Therapy moves people from dysfunctional to functional, whereas coaching and mentoring focus on moving from ordinary to excellent.
While outcomes depend on many factors, my endeavour is to "help you help yourself" with those within your control.
How do we meet?
On Zoom in the evenings or on weekends, in a quiet room with a stable connection.
How long?
I dislike unresolved issues, which is why I prefer working through problems until everything makes sense, rather than watching the clock. Sessions are short (about 1 hour) or long (2 hours); long sessions cost twice the short.
How often?
The programme is intended for long-term support. We work together for as long as needed.
When do I pay? Can I reschedule?
Refer to the "Key commercial terms" section in the Terms and Conditions.
Do you respect privacy?
My professional roles have required the respect for privacy in many ways, from handling recommendation letters to signing NDAs, and this standard applies to our work as well. Confidentiality and discretion are guaranteed. I communicate conservatively and use your personal data solely within the scope of our work (scheduling, follow-ups, invoicing). The Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy govern the relationship.
