Project Title
Investigating Leptospira interrogans virulence proteins
Project Description
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by Leptospira spp. that affects both humans and animals. Due to the wide range of (or lack of symptoms) displayed by those infected, it can be misdiagnosed as other diseases. Without proper treatment, leptospirosis will lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and ultimately death. Leptospirosis continues to be a threat globally and in Malaysia as observed from deaths reported in the media from time to time.
Our group has identified putative leptospira virulence factors from a previous study and this project seeks to understand these virulence factors by further characterisation of the virulence proteins using the eukaryotic model yeast.
If you would like to pursue your postgraduate degree by research, then this project will allow you to be trained in molecular biology methods in the lab alongside scientific writing and communication skills.
