Which moderation skills do I need to gain in order to be an effective community organiser?

Module Overview:

Module 1.2 introduced actor identification, baseline assessment, driver mapping, and relationship building as helpful tools for the early stages of community mobilisation. Module 1.3 invites you to self-assess your comfort with using these tools. Worksheets will review key concepts and provide templates for you to complete the initial evaluation of a socioenvironmental system of your choice.

Module Objectives:

- identify and redress gaps in knowledge about Community Environmental Action Planning and participatory methods
- practice techniques to prepare for community mobilisation

Engaging Communities in Socioenvironmental Systems

You are encouraged to practice preparing for community mobilisation by applying the tools below to your own socioenvironmental system. If you are new to Community Environmental Action Planning and aren't sure where to start, it’s a good idea to explore the Synthesis Report of Community Environmental Action Planning: A Handbook for Practitioners in Sudan, which provides both an overview of CEAP ideas and methodologies, and a range of examples from its application.

Baseline Assessment

HOW DO I CONDUCT A BASELINE ASSESSMENT?

Driver Mapping

HOW DO I CREATE A DRIVER MAP?

Identify the different pressures and shocks that are driving conflict and climate risks.
Highlight important structural factors and forces and how they interact with different pressures and shocks, as well as the links between climate impacts and conflict drivers and dynamics.
Include already existing or potential future conflict dynamics and the drivers of these conflict dynamics, for example, marginalisation, livelihood insecurity or weak governance.
Group the drivers into different categories, for example, environmental, social, political and economic drivers.
Use arrows to indicate the interactions between different drivers and conflict dynamics.
Visualise potential climate change impacts and their interactions with different conflict drivers and dynamics.
