Acoustic Build

Day 1—Afternoon

Afternoon Session:

More sanding and gluing and sanding and gluing, and sanding and glu...

Unmount the bottom/bracing assembly and repeat the process for the top and bracing.

DRY FIT ALL PIECES PRIOR TO GLUING!

  • Set the base pieces first followed by the X-bracing.
  • The other braces can follow later.

Space gets tight as the various bracing pieces are added to the base pieces.

Hint: Try to align the gobar rods to be in line with the bracing.

"Driving the Bus:" Rounds 1 & 2

Chalking the bottom prior to sanding the recently glued up kerfing, sides and neck/tail blocks. Once the bottom is done (AKA "Round #1), the mold assembly is flipped, re-secured, and rotary sanding of the the top edges of the side assembly begins (AKA "Round #2).

Our instructors explained that earlier STEM Acoustic build events did not have the full BBT guitar mold/spreader pair to firmly hold the side assembly within the 25ft sanding rig. Sometimes, it pays to not be an early adopter.

Apply kerfing to the top of the side assembly.

Again, just above the top (sanded) edge by about one fingernail thickness will save lots of 25 foot radius sanding effort

Laying out, drilling, sawing, and gluing the ebony top plate on the headstock.
