The enchantment of new discoveries
The theme for my novel is, the enchantmeant of new discoveries. The narrative unfolds through the lens of M Arronox, a mid 17th century scientist that spends his life immersed in the study of various organic specimens. As the story progresses he is introduced through the course of capture to Captain Nemo, a highly intelligent man who has renounced the land above to live the rest of his days in his submarine, the Nautilus, and roam the seas. Arronox learns much from the captain, he also is shown new technology and an uncharted realm of the world he falls in love with. As we read from the perspective of M Aronox, he documents his thoughts and personal takes on his experiences, and we see from his conversation that he loves seeking knowledge and is enthralled by the discovery of the unknown. We see this as Captain Nemo offers the use of his very large library, one of the few reminisce aboard the submarine of the world above. Arronox replies to this with much affection: "I'm greatly obliged, sir, that you have placed this library at my disposal. It is a vast storehouse of science and contains many real treasures. I shall profit from them.
Later while his comrades are developing a plan to escape, we see Arronox is conflicted. He states: “I certainly had no inclination to abandon our commander. Thanks to him and his apparatus, I was coming each day nearer to the completion of my submarine studies. And I was rewriting my book on undersea depths while in the very element with which my work dealt. Should I ever again have such a chance to observe the marvels of the ocean? No, a thousand times no! And I found I simply could not force myself to quit the Nautilus before my cycle of investigation should be completed” Though technically still a prisoner he feels like he has been awarded with a gift, being able to share the wonders of the sea with someone who knows most about them. Between wanting to share what he has seen with the world he also feels there is still more to learn and is quite content to serve as Captain Nemo's prisoner, and continue to feed his human wonder for discovery.
