One of my modules from university asked me to design and produce an art piece of an environment in a game world of the theme myths and legends or fantastical sea. I choose fantastical sea as I had little knowledge of many myths or legends, and I liked the visuals of the sea more. Here is my art piece.
The location I choose for my environment was a coral reef that had been transformed into an underwater city, where each colourful coral platform had a different building built upon it. At the foot of the reef laid a white palace made of crystals that glow from the sunlight above. In the background, schools of fish are seen swimming around. Overall, I am very happy with the turnout of this image, the development of the image was clear and calculated as seen below.
First basic sketch detailing general shape, angle, and focus.
Second refined sketch showing the final designs for coral placement, terrain layout and first design of the palace.
Third sketch showing initial design of buildings.
Final sketch showing more accurate representation of layout and sea grass layering the floor.
Personally, I like the final black and white sketch more than the final design due to the harder and more defined edges over the smoothness of the coloured variant. A few things had to be cut from the final image such as the fountain as I realised, I had no idea how to draw a fountain that sprayed air instead of water, especially coloured with accurate shading. I think more design work could be done to improve the quality of the buildings, making the m have the level of detail shown in the third sketch however I am quite proud of the final image, considering my programming strengths.
