Issues

Pedogogic problems of MOOCs include weak connections between instructors and learners, limited modes of assessment, and a lower engagement. Dropout rates are very high.  In 2012, only 10% of students completed courses (Tamburri, 2012). The Hollands and Kazi (2019) study estimated that 15% of the learners completed their courses.

MOOCs offering micro-credentials dominate the market, which could threaten more-expensive traditional offerings from universities.

A system of global transfer credits has not yet been developed, but universities will likely have to embrace the modular, stackable, and portable learning that MOOCs offer. CIVIS, a consortium of 11 European universities, is an example on one way in which portable learning is being accommodated.
