In the previous section, we explored factors to consider when designing mobile learning and collaborative learning experiences. Now, let's explore future trends of mobile learning and technologies for collaboration.
A Framework for mobile-first workplace education?
Before looking at technological advancements of mobile devices that afford us new opportunities to collaborate, it may be beneficial to look at a framework for how we approach a future with greater mobile collaboration.
Here is an example framework and perspective from one corporate training organization, called MPPG:
Mobile-First
Participatory
Personalized
Group-based Learning

Gaming & mobile collaboration
Gamification
The advancement of personal and mobile devices has significantly influenced organizational training and learning. As smartphones have evolved to support a wide range of applications and games, the popularity of mobile gaming has led to increased interest in game-based learning and evaluation within organizations (Kim, 2021). The adoption of game based elements in non-game contexts is known as gamification (Agredo-Delgado & Ruiz, 2018).
These gaming elements are employed to boost employee motivation, collaboration, and learning. Examples of gaming elements incorporated into organizational training include medals, badges, rankings, leaderboards, levels, avatars, and rewards (Agredo-Delgado & Ruiz, 2018).
Artificial Intelligence & mobile collaboration
Multimodal AI Models
One emerging trend in AI is the integration of different types of media, including text, images, audio and videos. Generative AI is creating the ability not only for assistance for when we interact with our colleagues and peers, but also a future where we can collaborate with AI in real time for training and education.
The integration of VR and mobile collaborative tools
A trend of how we work and learn in workplace education may be the integration of tools we are familiar with such as tablets and mobile phones, but what about with tools we seldom use in workplace education, such as VR headsets? This technological convergence through virtual reality is becoming more commonplace, but to what extent will could we use this in educational contexts has yet to be discovered.
Watch this video from one company on how they use VR headsets to collaborate.
Case Study: Arkio
Arkio is a collaborative spatial design tool that enables colleagues to design, develop, and collaborate on architectural projects using VR. It enables the use of other mobile devices for collaboration such as phones and tablets.
