Curriculum Guide

This user guide will help teachers implement the project in their own classrooms. Students will focus on interaction in their own physical environment and share those experiences through (co-)creation of digital media. The target learners are students in Grades 10 -12 in a fully online, synchronous learning environment enrolled in Biology 20 of the Alberta Science Program. Selected outcomes identified in the lesson plans come from both the foundational philosophy of the Alberta science program and the specific outcomes from Unit B in Biology 20. As well, the identified collection of outcomes have been highlighted in curricular connections.

The core procedural knowledge focus relates to digital literacy, digital citizenship, and the inquiry process: learners will define topics or issues, research, compile, and evaluate relevant information, synthesize and reflect, and create and disseminate an artefact demonstrating their learning, position, or point-of-view (Alberta Learning, 2004). Learners will clearly communicate their current understanding for a selected audience, engage in discourse with others, and demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn from others’ points-of-view.

Learners will be able to articulate how they can be engaged in conservation, sustainable practices, and advocate for environmental issues both locally and globally. Using cognitive and technical skill, learners will engage with digital media and their peers to create an artifact related to elements/aspects of environmental stewardship.
