Prior Knowledge


The anticipated learners are students enrolled in online or blended Alberta Biology 20 course. It is assumed that, based on K-10 curriculum, the learners will possess the following prior knowledge:

  • Selecting issue-based topics

  • Searching for, collecting, and evaluating relevant information with guidance

  • Working collaboratively to check understanding and explore the perspectives of others

  • Using technology appropriately to search for and collect information, compose reports, papers, or projects, and disseminate their results

  • Reflecting on their feelings, progress, and their process with guidance

  • Ability to use science and technology to acquire new knowledge and solve problems, so that they may improve the quality of their own lives and the lives of others

  • Critically address science-related societal, economic, ethical and environmental issues

  • Knowledge of biological diversity, life, and environmental sciences


Specifically the Unit B, Biology 11 curriculum builds on:

  • Grade 7 Science, Unit A: Interactions and Ecosystems

  • Grade 8 Science, Unit E: Freshwater and Saltwater Systems

  • Grade 9 Science, Unit A: Biological Diversity
