Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

This program of study prepares students to work in government agencies, business and industry entry-level positions, and travel agencies. It is developed to provide students with the language skills--understanding, speaking, reading, and writing--necessary to function effectively in the environment native to the language.

An oral interview is required upon entering the program and before graduation in order to evaluate progress and proficiency. Graduates must attain an ACTFL Oral Proficiency rating of "Intermediate High." Moreover, a major in good standing must maintain a 3.0 grade point average in the modern language.


Second Program of Study: The student is required to complete a second program of study from 15 to 30 hours in another discipline of the student’s choice.


Recommendation: It is strongly recommended that all majors participate in an acceptable study program abroad in which they will be exposed to the target language and culture.

Bachelor of Science in Education for Spanish

Upon successful completion of this program of study, students will be certified to teach Spanish language and cultures in public schools grades K-12. This program works in conjunction with ESU's Teacher's College to provide future educators with the language skills--understanding, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as the current methods, pedagogy and technology necessary to effectively facilitate a healthy communication-focused classroom environment.

31 hours (beyond the first-year courses that are prerequisites), while maintaining a 3.0 grade point average in the modern language.

Phase 2 (Student Teaching):

During the Student Teaching Semester (or before applying for licensure), the student must pass the Principles of Learning and Teaching Exam and content area exam(s).
