Reflexology has a rich history, with evidence of its practice dating back thousands of years. In Egypt, a pictograph depicting reflexology was discovered in the tomb of an ancient physician. Some researchers suggest that it has been practiced for over 5,500 years, particularly by Indian, Chinese, and Japanese Buddhist monks. Similarly, the Incas and other Indigenous cultures are believed to have used pressure point techniques on the feet for healing. Over millennia, reflexology has been used as both a preventive measure against illness and a therapeutic approach to alleviate various medical conditions.
According to The Reflexology Association of Canada (R.A.C., reflexologycanada.org), Denmark, Germany, and England, the governments support reflexology research and honour it as a complementary health discipline. In Canada, The Reflexology Association is currently working with various governments levels to be a complementary health discipline. In many American First Nation's societies, foot work is practiced to this day and the teachings are usually transmitted orally from generation to generation.
