A diverse and broad term, covering all videos on Youtube involving video games. There are many forms, from speechless playthroughs, 100% walkthroughs, reviews, competitions, and even commentary playthroughs and live streaming. A Playthrough is a playlist on YouTube that merely shows the gameplay of that YouTuber. A 100% Walkthrough is just as it sounds, a walkthrough on how to complete a certain game 100%. A review video is where a YouTuber discusses the positives and negatives of a game, and is occasionally used to determine the ranking of a game, or if it is even worth buying. Competitive gaming is where multiple players come together to see who is better at a certain type of game, and there is even a professional division of this genre. And A Commentary is when a YouTuber records their gameplay and record themselves conversing with the audience. The last of them, commentary playthroughs, have become the most popular of the genre, producing some of the most famous personalities on YouTube.
These personalities, like Markiplier or Jacksepticeye, have grown so popular that they are paid millions by their sponsors to gain from their popularity, making many more people try their hand at becoming YouTubers. Their popularity stems from a number of possible reasons, from Escapism to simple relaxation. Some watch it to play certain games vicariously through the gamers, and some watch it as a source of humor and relaxation. Others still use it as a gateway to escape from their troubles, and some may even watch it because they have some form of feelings or attachment to the YouTuber.
