The whole idea of making an escape room is that students have to find codes and fill in some kind of form to check if these answers are correct. They know, if what they filled in, is correct by filling in the codes.
For creating your escape room, it means that you have to find ways to generate a code. Here are some examples:
1 Choose between two options:
You can create an AB code or a Correct/Incorrect code or even a number code 12.
Example:
I A was / B have been in the garden yesterday.
How 1 do / 2 does your mother know you were out yesterday?
Fill in a C or a I if the sentence is correct or incorrect. (the code is: IC, but you can make it as long as you wish)
My mother have been to the store.
You have proven me wrong.
2 Choose the item:
If you want to know if your students understand what certain items are, you can choose to let them put a label on items. You can choose any letter or number to use here.
Example:
Choose Y for the past simple. Choose X for the present perfect. Choose Z for the past continuous.
Choose 1 for the positive (good) 2 for the comparative (better) 3 for the superlative (best)
3 How many times:
When doing grammar you can choose to let the students count how many times they have to fill in a certain item. You can even make it into a sum e.g. 11 adjectives + 12 adverbs = 23
Example:
Count how many times you filled in an ADJECTIVE or an ADVERB. Add up the numbers.
Count how many times you used will, going to, present continuous. Put these three numbers together to create your number code.
There are so many fun things that you can do with vocabulary. Here are a few fun ideas
1 the website https://www.edu-games.org/ offers a wide range of crossword puzzles, letter games, word games, sentence games.
My favourite is a hidden word crossword. It generates a word in the middle that you can use as a code.
2 Fill in the correct word
Give them an exercise where they have to fill in the correct word. Give the words with codes. Or you can let them use the first letters of the words. Or to make it even more complicated you can think of something very intricate such as: the first letter of the first word, the last letter of the second word.
Example:
A cat B Mouse C Giraffe
The ...... has a long neck
The ... is very small
The ..... was already a pet in ancient Egypt.
3 Anagrams
These are words where the letters have been scrambled.
I use this website: https://ingesanagram.appspot.com/
For example: Drs Pie is a nice anagram for spider.
4 word puzzles (rebus in Dutch)
I use this website: https://rebus.club/en
For example this one for spider
5 descriptions or riddles. You can use the letters of the outcomes as a code. They can spell a word or can even be a letter code: Use the first letters or use the first letter of word 1, the second letter of word 2 and so on. You can make it as complicated as your want.
Example:
An animal that looks like a small horse with black and white stripes.
