Project Lead The Way LAUNCH Lead Teacher
I was nominated for the position of LAUNCH Lead Teacher for Elgin Public Schools District, responsible for implementing the LAUNCH curriculum, through my participation in Lawton Public Schools' Math and Science Partnership. The LAUNCH curriculum implementation was a multi-division initiative to bring STEM to elementary students and create 21st century digital citizens. Lead Teacher training was an offsite, three-day professional development.

As Lead Teacher, I was responsible for the training and coaching of 10 grade-level ambassador teachers. Due to the unique nature of my small district, these 10 teachers, teaching at a school with 1,500 students from K-5, were spread out in four different buildings across campus. This made coaching a challenge! I was also in charge of the dissemination and management of some $30,000-worth of STEM equipment and an iPad cart. I was able to co-teach several classes with lower grade level teachers, demonstrating the LAUNCH model and supporting them through their first attempts with a new curriculum and delivery system. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue the training because I left the district due to military retirement. I wish I'd been able to stay and keep the ball rolling!

I was chosen for the position of Team Leader of a 5-person curriculum and assessment writing team because of my participation in Lawton Public Schools' Math and Science Parternship. Oklahoma had just adopted the Next Generation Science Standards, and the state department of education wanted to adopt a new format of standardized test. The goal was to have a stimulus with a cluster of related questions. There was no blueprint for this endeavor -- it was an entirely new concept. In coordination with Tiffany Neill, the Oklahoma Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, I managed the writing of 8 bundles of sample and practice items for dissemination across the state. When my team was complete, I was asked to assist the middle school team in completion of their bundles. I have included two examples to the right.

I have served as my grade-level team leader as well as the Collaborative Teacher Teams (CTT) Data Team Leader. The CTT process is a district initiative that began my first year at WJCC Schools and, being a data-oriented teacher, I seemed a good fit for the job. Over three years of implementation, I pursued my own professional development on the process in addition to training provided by my district. As a result, my team became the district standard for CTT Data Teams, visited so frequently by teams from central office and other buildings that district leadership filmed us for professional development purposes.
I have served as my grade-level team leader as well as the Collaborative Teacher Teams (CTT) Data Team Leader. My time in the Army, and the leadership training that came along with it, prepared me to provide opportunities for team members to shine, allow for a voice for each member, delegate to share the workload, and create a cohesive 5th grade team.

I applied to be my school's Science Curriculum Leader during my second year at James River Elementary. My first priority was to improve James River's less-than-stellar 5th grade science SOL scores. I worked closely with the District Science Curriculum Coordinator using data from unit assessments to develop cross-curricular units and lessons. Students engaged in hands-on learning experiences, focusing less on vocabulary and recall and more on the cross-cutting concepts underlying all science content. As students understand the "why" and "how" rather than just the "what." scores increased.
