My architectural series of ceramics presents what it is I love about my career presented in the form of clay. Having grown up in an area rich with historical buildings I have always loved the handcrafted details of historical homes and commercial buildings. As I am just starting to scratch the surface and develop the techniques to bring my visions of these details to reality in clay form, I expect for this body of work to slowly grow as I turn my techniques and failures into successful firings.
Each door knob handle is molded from from an original historic design or reproduction and cast from the same clay as the body of the mug. Historically a selection of decorative knobs were available from door hardware manufacturers, while others were commissioned specifically for the building they were custom designed for. Often you will see monogrammed, or special designs at hotels, state houses, schools, and banks, etc..., starting in the late 1800's.
The handles on these mugs are hand sculpted in the style of historic thumb latch door pulls, matted to a hand rolled slab body with a pressed key motif created from historic skeleton keys.

The Historic "Lincoln Alliance Bank" building at 183 East Main Street in Rochester NY. Constructed in 1926, originally designed by McKim, Mead, and White Architects. This mug features a cast of one of the original brass doorknobs which has a monogram "LAB" on the face. A small plaque below the knob that reads "est. 1926". The Building is currently going through a renovation to become 130 +/- residential apartment units. Construction to be completed in early 2019. With potential future renovations to the historic bank hall.
My tumblers are created from slip cast molds which I created from historic escutcheon door plates. I am currently reworking these molds to create a more consistent success rate in my final product.
