"Welcome to [the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps]. The mission of Air Force Junior ROTC is 'Developing citizens of character.' Air Force Junior ROTC is not a military accessions program and cadets are never under any obligation to join the military. Air Force Junior ROTC is a Title 10 U.S. Code mandated citizenship training program that is designed to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service, instill personal responsibility, character, and self-discipline. The program achieves this through classroom education in air and space fundamentals and hands on learning opportunities in a number of fun and challenging co-curricular activities."
- Colonel Matthew E. Tipton, Director, Air Force Junior ROTC
What is Air Force Junior ROTC?
The Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFJROTC) is a military-funded high school program designed to educate and train cadets in citizenship, promote community service, instill personal responsibility, character, and self-discipline. The program also gives cadets an understanding of the fundamentals of flight/aerospace science, and promotes health and wellness through physical training.
Do I have to join the military after AFJROTC?
No. As stated in the introduction, cadets are not compelled to join the military. Instead military service is presented and encouraged as a career path, and completion of AFJROTC training will provide certain benefits for those who choose to pursue a military career.
Will I have to wear a uniform in AFJROTC?
Yes, you can opt-out. First-year cadets will not be required to wear uniforms as of the 2024-25 school year. However if a cadet chooses to wear a uniform their first year, or attend a second year of the program, they will be expected to wear the uniform every Thursday and keep in line with grooming standards (hair, nails, etc.).
Do I have to pay for my AFJROTC uniform?
No. Not one penny. AFJROTC uniforms are provided to cadets free of charge and are returned to the unit upon them leaving with the exception of ribbons, shoes, and physical training gear. Cadets will never have to pay a single dime during their time in AFJROTC, however there are numerous optional programs that are paid for such as Cadet Officer Leadership Program and the Dover Air Force Base field trip.
Can students enrolled in the Science and Tech Program join AFJROTC?
Of course! The program is open to all Eleanor Roosevelt High School students, including Science and Tech students.
What opportunities does AFJROTC provide post-graduation?
AFJROTC provides numerous scholarship opportunities. Completion of the program also provides cadets with the ability to enlist in any branch of the military as an E-2 or E-3, which translates to more pay.
I don't have enough room in my schedule. Can I still join AFJROTC?
Cadets can consider replacing certain courses with AFJROTC. For example completing 3 years of Aerospace Science (which is the official name for the AFJROTC course) awards cadets with 1 Completer Credit, the same credit students obtain from 2 years of a word language. For people with a tight schedule this can free up room and allow them to enroll in AFJROTC.
Those looking to join AFJROTC for the 2025-26 school year, please select "Aerospace Science 1" in the course request form.
