PhD Topic 1 : Experimental fluid Mechanics - "Micro-structural origin of chaotic mixing in porous media "

The PhD candidate will uncover the physical mechanisms producing chaotic advection in laminar fluid flows through porous structures. The candidate will use 3D printing tools to replicate natural porous architectures (rocks, fractures, vessels, membranes) and image scalar transport via new tomography techniques.  We look for a motivated and smart graduated student who wish to pursue her/his studies by a PhD degree in Earth Sciences or Experimental Physics.

3 year position - gross monthly salary ~2000€
Potential collaborations with RMIT (Australia)

keywords : experimental fluid mechanics, dynamical systems, laser and optics, 3D printing

PhD Topic 2 : Experimental fluid Mechanics - "Scalar signature of chaotic mixing"

The PhD candidate will develop a new and promising experiment of push-pull flow reversal that has recently been conceived in our laboratory. This new imaging technique is capable of producing high resolution images of scalar transport in natural porous samples. The challenge is to adapt and apply the method to a large range of natural porous materials and fluids to investigate the consequences of mixing and dispersion in reactive transport. We look for a motivated and smart graduated student who wish to pursue her/his studies with a PhD degree in Earth Sciences or Experimental Physics.

Post-Doc Topic 3 : Computational Fluid Mechanics - "Multi-scale mixing in porous media"

This position targets a multi-scale description of chaotic mixing processes in 3D porous media, from the pore scale to the Darcy scale, through high-resolution numerical simulations of transport in Stokes and Darcy flows. The coupling between dispersion at large scale and mixing at the Batchelor scale will be investigated, and a theoretical framework proposed to describe the evolution of scalar concentration and gradients in porous flows constrained by large scale dispersive processes. We look for a talented young researcher who obtained her/his PhD in applied Earth Science or Physics with good autonomy and good skills in computational methods.

keywords : transport and dispersion, computational fluid dynamics, stochastic modelling

Post-Doc Topic 4 : Engineering -  "Smart Porous flows"

The challenge here is to design and build smart porous structures of controlled chaotic mixing properties for key reactive transport applications such as chromatography, filtering and batteries. The candidate will use numerical simulations and 3D printing to optimize and build prototypes of these porous structures that can selectively enhance or reduce reaction rates by tuning chaotic stretching rates. Their chemical behavior in reactive transport experiments will then be assessed. We look for a talented young researcher who obtained her/his PhD in applied Earth Science or Physics with good skills with computational methods. We look for a talented young researcher who obtained her/his PhD in applied Earth Science or Physics with good autonomy and versatile numerical and experimental skills at the frontier of Physics, Chemistry and Hydrology.
