• Students know the standards and they are accessible to them.

• Students are involved in self-assessing their progress - metacognition

• Labels and language have to do with progress, not person. Such as...: Exceeds Standard, Meets Standard, Progressing, Insufficient Evidence.

• Risk taking: students must be comfortable with taking risk as part of the learning process. Having an opportunity to improve meeting a standard takes away some of the anxiety, with features such as Decaying Average, Retakes, or multiple methods to demonstrate mastery
