Labels and language have to do with progress, not person. Such as...: Exceeds Standard, Meets Standard, Progressing, Insufficient Evidence.
Risk taking: students must be comfortable with taking risk as part of the learning process. Having an opportunity to improve meeting a standard takes away some of the anxiety, with features such as Decaying Average, Retakes, or multiple methods to demonstrate mastery

Use outcomes (either SLOs or outcomes you set yourself) and rubrics - 4 point scale works well
Consider a decaying average to weight more recent experience and reward growth
