Citizen: An American Lyric, a book by Claudia Rankine, was written to send a message about the different relationships among races here in the United States. It focuses more specifically on the relationships between white and African American people. Rankine’s use of the word “you” throughout the book is extremely important. She makes use of such a common word but gives it a major role in this book as she uses it to make sure that the message she wants to send out to the reader gets to them. She wants the readers to be in the shoes of those people she describes in the different passages. By using the word “you,” she makes the reader feel connected to the text. It is almost as if it was the reader who is experiencing the microaggressions that are described throughout the book. Once I started to read the different stories about the things people have experienced, I felt more connected to the person experiencing it. It made me surprised how it was almost as if I had experienced being there since the stories are written from a perspective that makes me imagine being in those situations. I believe that it is crucial to note how Rankine uses the different visual images throughout the text. She uses images in certain parts of the text in which she wants the reader to have a better understanding of what is going on. One that stood out the most for me was the image of Caroline Wozniacki when she mocks Serena by stuffing her clothes with towels. Seeing the picture made me realize to what degree she was mocking Serena, mocking her for her features as an African American woman. While reading the text, I just kept thinking about how she could bring herself to do such a thing. Then after seeing the image, it made me feel both disappointment and anger. It was surprising that both Serena and Caroline are friends, yet Caroline decided to mock her appearance in front of many people.
When I first learned that we had to write a paper, I felt nervous because I did not feel ready to write a big assignment. I first read the prompt, and we also looked at it in class. I was anxious because I did not know how I was going to write the paper. It was scary to think that I had to write a 4 to 6 page paper, and since it was my first time writing an essay for a college class, it made me more nervous. I became less scared since we spent a lot of time in class going over the text of Rankine’s book Citizen: An American Lyric. We also spent plenty of time going over the prompt and getting to understand what we would have to do for the assignment. The book was a little bit difficult to read, but I was able to understand it better thanks to the discussions we did. Seeing other people’s points of view made me realize some important details I had not paid attention to when reading the text. It also made my understanding of certain parts of the chapters broader and made me realize why Rankine chose the specific structure for her book. Once I had a better understanding, I decided to choose which prompt to use for the writing assignment.
After paying attention to the different prompts, I decided to choose the one that I understood more. Therefore I chose the one which states that Citizen: An American Lyric should be a common reading among university students. Before choosing this specific question, I decided to ask myself the questions on the two different prompts. I then found that I was more interested in arguing why more university students should read it and not whether the book was effective or not. I chose that prompt because I believe that more young people should read the book. It is informative, and it might teach them something new like it taught me about implicit biases and past events which involve microaggressions. After that, I started to think about what to write for my thesis statement, and I decided to go with the way Claudia Rankine wrote her book. She chose a specific structure to give the text in the book a deeper meaning, which is why I picked it to prove my point. I then came up with my second criteria of how she includes disturbing images in the text since it caught my attention the most when I first encountered the book. Coming up with the third criteria was difficult; I even had asked Jacob in SI for help. I then came up with the third reason, which was about her inclusion of literature terms, in this case, similies. After I had my thesis statement, I wrote a rough draft and submitted it for an assignment. After getting feedback from a peer on my rough draft, I made a few changes and added more information as well.
Throughout the whole process of the paper, it made me realize how I question my capabilities way too often. I was scared to start the assignment because I thought that it was too difficult for me. But as I did more and more assignments about the paper, it made it easier to complete the writing paper. Now that I am preparing for the next writing assignment, I hope to build upon not procrastinating and taking more steps along the way, such as doing more research or creating more than one rough draft.
The role that art serves in society is extremely important because it gives people the opportunity to be themselves and even challenge society. It gives people the chance to be creative and make paintings or even sculptures representing their opinions. Art is unique to each person, which means that it can have different meanings to individuals regarding what they consider as art. Some might consider graffiti art which often challenges society with its descriptive images about today’s problems such as racism or sexism, and others might just think of it as vandalism. It is also important to note that art can show people’s feelings since it helps to express emotions without having to use words. It is crucial to society because it can bring people together, such as those who share the same beliefs, opinions, and feelings. Art also brings hope, for a better future, for a better society proving that times are changing and that people are noticing crucial problems which need to be dealt with such as the judgment of people based on their skin color.
I have to say that it is unfortunate that when a school has to make spending cuts they choose arts as one of the first subjects that have to go. This might be because there are people who believe that art is not an important thing that should be taught to kids, and according to the article “Why we don’t do art in school (and why we should)” they want to “spend more time on subjects more likely to raise scores on standardized tests”. Therefore, they are most likely going to choose to spend more money on subjects such as math, science, or even English rather than arts because of the belief that arts will not help them in the future and other subjects will. But it is an important subject that can help students have a good time and even use it as a form of therapy to express their suppressed feelings. Also, students are going to explore more than just the usual subjects taught in elementary, middle school, and high school, which can help them find their interests not only in school but possibly even in their life.
