About Skopje

Welcome to Skopje, the city where diversities unite

The capital of North Macedonia, Skopje is home to various events, festivals, and happenings throughout the year. The city, where the ancient meets the contemporary, embodies the spirit of Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Yugoslavian periods. The river Vardar divides the city into two halves, and the famous landmark Stone Bridge connects the two sides. During the Roman period the city was known under the name Scupi, which probably comes from the Greek ἐπίσκοπος, i.e. episcopus (lit. “watcher, observer”). Kale [kɑ.ˈle], the Fortress of Skopje, graciously stands on the north bank of the Vardar. On the southwest of the city, the 66 metre-high Millennium Cross can be seen on the top of the Vodno Mountain.
