Colt St. Amand, PhD, MD (he/they) is a licensed clinical psychologist (PhD) and a licensed physician (MD) currently in his last year of Family Medicine Residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He has been publishing peer reviewed research for over a decade and is considered an international expert in the field of transgender health. He has trained 100s of healthcare providers to provide affirming and supportive gender affirming assessments for gender embodiment surgeries with his Gender ASSET training since 2016. (See Dr. St. Amand's website here.)
Erin Hipple, MSW, MA, LCSW, PhD (they/them) is an educator, trauma therapist, and qualitative researcher. Their background is in social work, psychology, theater, music, and writing. They received their MA in Psychology at West Chester University and their MSW and PhD in Social Work at Widener University. (Read Dr. Hipple's entire profile here.)
Description: In order to access gender affirming medical procedures, transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive people often require a letter of support from a licensed mental health provider. Many licensed mental health providers are unaware that they are able to write letters for their clients seeking gender affirming surgery. Providers who are aware of their ability to write these letters are often not sufficiently trained in an informed consent-based and comprehensive model of assessment and letter writing.
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care criteria for gender affirming surgeries. They will also be introduced to the most comprehensive evaluation tool to assess these criteria: The Gender ASSET (St. Amand & Keo, 2016). Participants will learn about justice issues related to the gatekeeping of letters of support for transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive people. Participants will be given an overview of the letter writing process as well as suggestions for additional training and resources that support mental health providers in standing in solidarity with transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive people.

Description: The overturning of Roe v. Wade via the Dobbs decision sent shockwaves through our nation. The public’s response was swift and voices, both for or against the decision, were heard most prominently from Adults. The underrepresented voices of Adolescents and Transition age youth were largely overlooked, much to the detriment of this population. This workshop aims to examine the needs and experiences of Adolescents and Transition age youth via both a historical and present focused lens of reproductive justice and abortion rights in the United States. Participants will explore the sexual health and developmental needs of teens as a foundation for understanding the impact of this landmark decision on their lives and the work of the professionals who serve them. The interactive conversation will raise awareness of both macro & micro level issues and uplift strategies to advocate for the needs of American youth.
