This virtual live training critically examines child welfare policies and the legal, political, and social forces that influence the structure and function of child welfare systems. We will focus on some of the major challenges of providing safety, permanency, and wellbeing to children in the system, and how the stakeholders - including social works, teachers, lawyers, judges, etc. often help to maintain and perpetuate the racism and bias embedded in the system.

The focus of this presentation is to define and discuss various types of trauma (i.e., complex trauma, racial trauma) and ways in which it can manifest in minoritized adolescents, specifically in urban communities. Ecological System Theory and theories of racial identity development will be used to frame the unique needs of urban adolescents. The aim of this presentation is to enhance participants’ awareness of the needs of children and adolescents experiencing grief and loss. The information will be presented from an interprofessional collaborative practice perspective and will ultimately enable participants to discuss specific interventions and strategies with clients, families and community members. Additional discussion will incorporate professional collaboration with school and other community systems around issues unique to grief and loss among this age group.

Continuing Education: Two (2) CE credits will be awarded to participants who attend the entire session live. Partial credit will not be awarded for late logins or early logouts. WCU has been designated as a pre-approved provider of professional Continuing Education (Section 47.36 (a)(1)) for LSW and LCSW social workers (Section 48.36(a)(1)) for LMFT, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists, and (Section 49.23(a)(1)) for LPC, Licensed Professional Counselors by the PA State Board of Social Workers Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. Other participants may request a Certificate of Attendance, if desired. Pre-tests, Post-tests, and the CEU and CoA Request Forms must be completed before certificates can be issued.
The EPIC Training Series is part of a research study. Participants are asked to complete an Informed Consent, pretest, and posttest.
All events are held virtually via Zoom. To sign-up for a free Zoom account, please go to http://www.zoom.us. Please log in with your full name to receive credit for attendance (necessary for those requesting CEUs and Certificates of Attendance).
