This is basic playing map of the End of the Line. Fishing families store their fleet either in Persinny, Port of Davis, Skmou, or Harchiya. Saltwater fish are found in Tiles 1 through 9, while freshwater and anadromous fish are primarily found in Tile 10. Ships that travel to Tile 5 must be prepared to fend off pirate and shark attacks. Few sailors have faced the Great Kraken (Tile 1) and lived to tell the tale.
All players start out with Class I ships, which can only travel along the coast. However, they can purchase Class II and III vessels, which are capable of traveling further from the coast. This enables them to access previously untapped populations of fish.
Sorlian cartographers believe that at the center of the universe lies a behemoth of unimaginable size. The further one travels from the sea, the more likely one is to encounter a sea beast. Additionally, the more treacherous beasts lie further from the coast. Sorlian prophets state that it is not God’s intention for us to travel into the ocean.
According to legend, humans came to exist in Sorlia eons ago after migrating from the Old Kingdom, traveling by boat through the Narrow Passage. Very few survived this arduous and treacherous journey. It is said that people fled the Old Kingdom after it a lack of fish started a famine, although few privy to this knowledge.
This creature is born in the ocean depths deeper than any fishing rod or net can reach. This creature can fly out of the water and breathe air as well as breathe underwater. He can only stay out of the water for up to 30 minutes before he dries out. He preys on and terrorizes the boats of fishermen who have not given him offerings of either gold, which he hoards, or fish from their catch. Born with a hatred for mankind and its overfishing methods, this mythical creature attacks many villages and kills all the fishermen.
The Giant Wood Leech is a leech that lives in saltwater, far away from the coast. This beast can be as long as a canoe, and the larger ones are estimated to weigh 15-20 stone. The Wood Leech can traverse the water at speeds as fast as 5 paces per second. These monstrosities feast on the wood of ships and boats, wrecking ships. The Giant Leech is said to punish sea-goers who fish for monetary gains. Those who fish for sustenance need not fear it. According to legend, consuming the blood of the Giant Wood Leech cures appendicitis.
The Durtle belongs to an endangered species within the medieval world of Sorlia. Durtle’s are majestic sea creatures that are believed to have been around since time began. Visually, it shares resemblances to two modern creatures; sea turtles and dolphins. Its strong shell protects it from attacks from small sea monsters while its dolphin-like tail allows it to travel at tremendous speeds. Much like turtles and dolphins in real life, the Durtles are protected by the kingdom. They are seen as a spiritual animal that holds sacred value to the kingdom’s history. There is absolutely no hunting down this creature.
The Durtle has the ability to detect nearby sea monsters. Because of its strong spiritual connection with the humans within the kingdom, it warns the sailors and fishermen of nearby sea monsters. In the event that a sea monster destroys the fishing boat, Durtles will carry the humans back to the coast in order to save them.
Sea serpents are large and fierce snake-like monsters that live in the middle region of the ocean, not too far into the waters and not too close to the land. They are extremely territorial, and may attack any sea vessels that sail through their territory. Fortunately, due to the size of these creatures, their territories are quite large, so ships can often sail through unnoticed. If noticed however, there is a slim chance that any vessel in a fleet will make it out intact. Migration patterns and population increase can sometimes lead to a sea serpent invading another’s territory. Since they are especially attuned to the signs of invaders of their own species, this will often result in a fight to the death between the two behemoths. Although this creates turbulent waters for any nearby ships, skilled enough sailors are in no real danger as long as they stay a fair distance from the actual combat. Those who have witnessed a fight like this say it is truly spectacular. Due to the formidable nature of the sea serpent, it has become somewhat revered among monster hunter circles. Killing one is the mark of a legendary monster hunter.
The Kraken is sometimes given the title “The Lord of the Sea,” and for good reason. It’s unparalleled size dwarfs the tallest mountains, and a single tentacle is as wide as a small island. It lives in the deep ocean, always a persistent threat to those willing to travel so far from the shore. For many expeditions into the deep ocean, it will remain dormant and harmless. However, it’s awakening spells the immediate doom to all parties in the area. It is unknown what directly causes the awakening, a lack of knowledge that is perpetuated by the minuscule number of survivors. Although anti-Kraken weapons have been developed, none have succeeded in the face of this unstoppable beast. Some speculate that the Kraken is a vessel for divine punishment, and therefore no weapon short of the divine will wound it. Whether or not this is true, the Kraken is certainly beyond the reach of mortals with their current level of technology.
