What is Flipped Learning?

My favorite definition of flipped learning:

Move the easy stuff out of the classroom and bring the hard (complex) stuff into the classroom.

A [Cute] Basic Definition

Here is a short video I use to explain the concept to parents. Also it has adorable paper penguins (and a walrus).

Limitations: this video gives a narrow view of what flipped learning can be, so it makes a reasonable introduction, but should be seen as just an introduction. I use this to explain to parents as it is short and demonstrates the primary means in my classroom.

More Ways to Define Flipping

A Big Words Definition

Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter.

The 4 Pillars of FLIP

This was first shared with me by Matinga Ragatz, a national trainer and a Michigan Teacher of the Year winner.

The 4 pillars are promoted by the Flipped Learning Network and serve as the principles that define what teaching in this style should look like.
