About the Teacher

Hilda Smolash

Hilda Smolash is a veteran teacher who is passionate about teaching English to new Canadians. She has been with the English Montreal School Board since 2009, teaching English (Common Core Basic Education – CCBE) at several EMSB Adult Centers. From 2013 to the present she has taught English to hundreds of learners at the High School of Montreal Adult Centre. She also mentors student-teachers who participate in her classes as Teaching Assistants.

Hilda has broad experience in the field of education. From 1994 to 2005 she taught literacy and ESL to large classes at Montreal’s YM-YWHA, while also serving as Academic Coordinator. In 2008 and 2009 she taught English at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), where her supervisor wrote that “Hilda Smolash has the ability to put students at ease and help them stay motivated to accomplish learning objectives quickly.” From 1978 to 1994 she taught folkdancing to teachers and students in several Montreal schools as well as on teaching tours across Canada and England.

Hilda is a lively engaging teacher with an interactive communicative teaching style and a ready smile, who prides herself on the success of her students. She studied teaching at McGill and Concordia Universities. She lives in Montreal with her husband Peter, who she says was her first “English student” when she met him as a 15-year-old new immigrant. They have three grown children and two grandchildren. When she is not teaching, you can find her kayaking, hiking, folkdancing, cross-country skiing, or traveling.
