I was fortunate enough to spend a PG year at an old-fashioned boarding school in Pennsylvania, called The Hill School. They say it is one of the best college preparatory schools in the world. That was 30 years ago. This book was the bible (with a small "b") for every class that had anything to do with English... and writing for that matter: so, every class except mathematics and physics. I called to see if anything had changed. It hasn't. So you can take that one of two ways: either my old school (and there is a book by Tobias Wolff about that school called "Old School") is out of style and out of touch with the modern world, or this book is still in style after all these years. It's the one I use whenever I second guess my own writing, and it works for me. Maybe you will find it useful too.
