( e.g. Figure 1)
Throughout the "Blurred Lines" music video, there are many pornographic and/or nude images. The women in the music video have on little to no clothing throughout the video which is dehumanizing and objectifying(figure 1 & 2). Kilbourne stated, 'Sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women."(Kilbourne, pg. 489). Although, there were 3 men in the video, none of them were nude or objectified. The pornographic imagery in the video is dehumanizing, because it deprives the women of their positive human qualities. In my opinion, standing in front of a camera naked is degrading for those women. Although, they may have felt comfortable doing so in that moment, I think their actions may have resulted in a loss of self- respect.
The lyrics of the song continuously repeats, "I know you want it." in the hook. Not only does this imply that when a woman says no she doesn't really mean it, it also shows the power men are interpreted to have over women. Kilbourne stated," Ad after ad implies that girls and women don't really mean "no" when they say it."(Kilbourne, pg. 492). In my opinion, this contributes to the rape culture. Sexual objectification is considered a behavior commonly associated with rape culture. The subjected victim in the image (Figure 2) is positioned towards the wall slightly swaying her hips. As pictured, Robin Thicke has decided that it would be a good idea to not only face her butt, but go the extra mile to smack it. Which, In my opinion was unnecessary and inappropriate. Some people may try to justify his actions by stating, "She asked for it.", but in fact she didn't.
(e.g. Figure 2)
(e.g. Figure 3)
In the video there are many actions taking place that are inappropriate and degrading to the women. In figure 3, Robin Thicke is pictured pulling the woman's hair. In the video the woman's hair was pulled numerous times. Robin is also pictured blowing smoke into the woman's face. "(Figure 5) The main goal, as in pornography, is usually power over another, either by the physical dominance or preferred status of men or what is seen as the exploitative power of female beauty and female sexuality. Men conquer and women ensnare."(Kilbourne, pg.489). Theses images further explain how the men in the video are pictured to be more dominant. The women are basically subject to disrespect throughout the video, and no problem is made because media perceives this as "normal".
