“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.”
– George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones
English 101B: Introduction to Literature is a reading, writing, and critical thinking course. You will learn to read closely and carefully, and to effectively express and support your ideas in writing.
Over the semester, we will read a variety of literature: short stories, poems, plays, and a novel. As a class, we will discuss, analyze, and explore literary works. Through reading a variety of genres and selections, I hope you will find literature that speaks to you, that you can connect with, or that enables you to feel, think, or understand the world or other people in a new light.
Books can be ordered online from the Ohlone College Bookstore. There are two required books for the course.
#1: Literature for Composition 11th Edition by Barnet, Burto, and Cain.
This anthology includes readings for the short story, poetry, and drama units, as well as valuable information about reading and writing about literature and sample student essays. You will need to use this text right away and regularly throughout the class. Be sure to buy the 11th edition, as some of the short stories we will read are NOT in the earlier editions and may be hard to find online.
#2 The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga.
This is the novel for the course, which we will read at the end of the semester. Buy it at the beginning of the semester so you will have a copy when you need it. If you have time, read it before it is assigned, then reread with the class--it will make more sense on a second reading!
