COVID-19's Box Office Impact Data Visualization Website
by Emilee Gallegos, Mason Parrish, Abril Perez, and Otis Wilson
This website is devoted to chronicling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that accompanied it on the United States box office. The data visualizations spread across the pages include a table documenting the revenue of the largest film studios in the US before, during, and after the pandemic, a bar graph depicting the highest-grossing films in the US between 2017-2023, and a line graph featuring the monthly box office gross for every month between 2017-2023, in addition to an animated infographic exploring shifts in genre releases from the largest studios in that timeframe. These graphics help to illustrate the severity of the pandemic's impact on the box office and in general, in addition to some of the changes that have happened since the pandemic compared to the box office prior to the pandemic. Some of the trends that have emerged post-pandemic also have interesting implications that studios genuinely may not have picked up on quite yet. Additionally, due to the nature of theaters as in-person experiences, the film industry was arguably the hardest-hit entertainment industry during the pandemic, which makes exploring its impact all the more significant. The data set referenced for these graphics comes from the https://pulse.boxofficepro.com/year website. Notably, this site does not include the international box office gross.Â
