This animated infographic shows the top 5 genres: suspense/action, drama, animation, comedy, and horror, as well as the top 5 studios - Disney, Warner Bros, Universal, Sony, and 20th Century Studios - and their production of films in those categories. It documents how many films each studio released in each genre across our general timespan, with the data divided from 2017-2019 (pre-COVID), 2020-2021 (during COVID), and 2022-2023 (post-COVID) to show how studios reacted to changing circumstances and how many films they were producing before, during, and after. For the suspense action genres, Sony is the leading studio from 2017-2023. In drama, comedy, and horror, the primary pre-COVID studio was Warner Bros. During the pandemic, Warner Bros, Universal, and Sony put out the most drama films. Today, the top studio for the drama genre is Sony. In animation, from 2017-2019, Disney was in the lead, but following the lull caused by the pandemic (with animated films mostly pushed to streaming), Universal has been top dog, which is arguably the most striking shift given how Disney is synonymous with animated productions. From 2020-2021, Sony and Universal released the most horror films. Since then, Universal has led the industry in terms of both comedy and horror films. 20th Century never quite took the lead, as even though they were acquired by Disney in 2019, they remain a distinct production company underneath them. The insights here aren't as major as the other graphs on this site, but they do still paint an interesting picture of how the pandemic impacted the release schedule and what kinds of films are making it to the theater now instead of being dumped onto streaming services, a trend that picked up a lot of steam due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is possible that the landscape will continue to shift further as companies either walk back those pandemic-induced mindsets, or if they instead continue to focus on releasing films solely on streaming services..
