Where I Am From
I was in kindergarten when this happened. So ever since I started school, I would be attached to my older brother like glue. I loved the fact that we both were able to go to the same school. This soon became a problem here and there since I would try to escape/ sneak out of my class to find/ be with my brother. Anyways, that caused my downfall this one particular day after school. I was being stubborn like always as my brother desperately tried to drop me off at the front office of our school. After multiple attempts, he was able to get me off his back but by the time I sadly turned to the front door to enter the office, a student had smacked the heavy, thick metal door to my forehead. To this day, I still don’t know who hit me with the door.
Where I'm From
by Nichole Fashakin
I am from the blood
From apple that fallen from the trees
I am from the air that blows in every which way
(Sweet, light
It tasted like cotton candy)
I am from the cherry blossom,
The spider lily
Whose unique beauty I remember
As if they were my own
I’m from the cream and glasses
From Affoussata and Akeem
I’m from the where the wild things are and i found Waldo
From hyped up to lets take it down 3 notches
I’m from He who save those that believe in him
And the Ten Commandments I must follow
I’m from Arlington and Joe pool lake
Fried chicken and sweet kool-aid
From the sense of smell my mother lost from vapor vicks
The hands i dodge to keep my glory
Under m bed there are documents
Spilling my history
Along with unknown faces
That tends to sneak into my dreams
I am from those moments
A dud bud that begins to blossom
From the family tree

A place I felt heard was during my senior year of high school (timestamp: right when we went into lockdown because of Covid). My English teacher felt bad for us since we had no idea when the lockdown would be lifted. As a result, she assigned us to write about how we felt during the lockdown and how it negatively impacted our senior year.
