“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.”
– Barack Obama
I know it's frustrating and scary when you need help in a class and feel alone. But rest assured, I am here for you! Provided that you communicate with me throughout the course, I'll do my best to support you any way I can. Your peers are here to support you as well. We are all entering this course with different understandings of and experiences with writing, reading, and research - not to mention the technological demands of taking a class online. Knowing this, we must all commit to respect each other and exercise patience and understanding when some of us "get" things right away and others need a little more time to understand.
If you find that you are struggling to "get" anything, please contact me immediately and we will make arrangements to meet to go over the material more carefully. I can meet with you via Zoom and we can go over whatever you're struggling with or just want to get a better handle on. Please don't wait until you are feeling helpless or completely frustrated to ask for help. Let's work together before that happens to ensure you succeed!
Hello! I’m Sloan, your Pass Peer for English 1A this semester. I first took this class with Kent during the Spring 2024 semester, and I really enjoyed it. It’s my pleasure to be available to help you all out.
A few things about me- firstly, I’ve loved History and English all my life, and so being a History major here at Sierra has been a pleasure. Secondly, I’m a big collector- whether it be typewriters, books or coins, I love making and maintaining collections. Finally, I’m a big fan of open-source literature and strongly believe people should be able to read the important stuff without having to pay exorbitant prices for out-of-print books.
My job as a Pass Peer is to assist YOU, the student. If you need help in this class, I’m a great first resource for any student who needs help. Please don't hesitate to reach out! Feel free to message me on Canvas or send me an email. I have regular meetings over Zoom (all details below).
Send me an email here, or you can message me on Canvas!

I have an in-person session for you all from 2:30pm until 4:30pm on Thursdays in the Tutoring Center on Rocklin Campus (LRC-402). You don’t need an appointment, and you don’t have to be there the whole time. Drop in as needed!
I also have a zoom session from 12pm until 2pm on Fridays- Same rules apply, drop in as needed! Make sure you tell the waiting room you’re looking for my session, and they’ll send you over.
I look forward to working with you!
The topics we cover in this class will relate to your experiences in life. They may also lead to some lively and often controversial discussions. We learn the most from people who don't share the same experiences, backgrounds, and opinions. Our lives are enriched and our world is expanded each time we take a moment to listen to someone else's story. It's important that we constantly step out of our own shoes to learn about who and what we don't know. I will be asking you to do this at all times during this class. It can be challenging, but we must make sure we all begin and stay at a place of respect for one another. In order for this class to be a brave learning space, we must agree to respect the variety of experiences, diversity of values, and the independence of thought each of us brings. This means we interact with one another with the intent not to offend, but to learn. Please be mindful of how your words may affect someone else and ask questions for clarification anytime you are unsure of another's intent. If you believe that I have overlooked a moment when someone oversteps one of these lines in discussion (including me!), I invite you to conference with me so that we might address how to proceed. It’s my intent to make our classroom a safe place for all backgrounds and beliefs.
Additionally, be aware of the possibility that exists for misinterpretation and confusion when we operate in an online format, where text is not accompanied by any of the verbal or visual cues that signal politeness, sarcasm, respect, or anger. Whenever discussing issues electronically, please assume positive intent, and ask for clarification whenever necessary.
Also, because this is an English class, you will be asked to write in complete words and use standard academic English. No “u” for “you” or “thx” for “thanks” in our online posts, please. Abbreviations such as “lol” and the like are fine elsewhere, but you’ll lose points (as well as academic and intellectual credibility) on any work that includes these informalities in this class. Students who use text slang or shortcuts will be given half-credit for posts in which these occur.
