Mentor Text

Compared to the Michael Twitty video, Love on the Spectrum is a combination of interview-style shots with each cast member and snippets of various dates they attend.

Unlike many modern TV shows, the design of this show is a simple and non-structured form, besides the interviewer asking a broad question in the beginning and producers being present during filming or in case of an emergency.

Like various other texts and works have touched on in this class, this trailer showcases particular struggles this group faces, specifically in finding love- a human desire almost everyone yearns for

It touches on the ranging sexual orientations of various cast members and some of the added challenges they face, as well as on a new area of interest not acknowledged in media, autism. This caused the show to pick up significant traction, which helps destigmatize those affected by this condition.

Hopefully, just like in the Miss America text with Vanessa Williams, “Love on the Spectrum” can inspire people within the autistic community and serve as inspiration for a community that seldom has a voice or representation in the media.

The producers play on emotions which causes the viewers to root for the cast members leading them to become invested in their journey to find love through many different tactics like...

  • Music in the background helps the viewers know what emotions they should be feeling based on the music genre.

  • How they film specifically from the view of an observer and/or interviewer style, meaning that the person is directly in front of the camera when being asked a question

    • As well as filming the show in a way that makes you feel like you are part of the journey each cast member embarks on, like a friend or family member instead of an unknown viewer with no relation to the cast members

  • The producers also direct the show in a way that makes it seem unscripted and suspenseful, captivating the audience.

  • Producers set up the show so that each cast member can have various "confessional moments" in each episode that help viewers understand how each cast member feels and what they think.

This show is future learning because it focuses on various people’s journey to find love and a sense of belonging, which keeps the attention of the viewer because everyone can relate to the struggle these people face
