My main influence for deciding to look into the inequalities of insurance coverage for people diagnosed with autism stemmed from my friend Abbie. Besides being a psychology major I had never really thought much about any specific condition on its own. Abbie was in a research lab at TCU that studied autism so I would often hear about how her day at the lab went. I guess you could call it pseudo priming, but that put the idea in my head, and then when she got a job at Therapy and Beyond working with kids I really started to think about taking a play out of her book and trying it myself. Once I decided to do that I was all in and I was thrilled to find out that this topic could be transferred into various aspects of almost each project we have done in this class!
Audience
My target audience for this website is people who are out of college but under the age of 30. I personally feel like they are the next group who will be able to start the ball moving. I aimed to use brief snippets of information to teach this group about the basics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the struggles they face, specifically in regard to insurance coverage and care. I also chose specific platforms that were age-specific and known to my audience so Twitter and Pinterest.
Positionality Acknowledgement
As a psychology major, who has studied many mental disorders, conditions, and the behind-the-scenes mechanisms responsible for them, I have discovered I have an interest in studying the human brain outside of just my college career. I specifically am interested in expanding my knowledge in the realm of autism and working to be an advocate for this underrepresented community. My current goal is to educate and highlight past, present, and future concerns regarding the availability of treatment covered by insurance.
