Full Scientific Name: Leopardus wiedii
Common Names: Tiger cat, Tigrillo, Gato-Peludo
Endangered Status: Near Threatened
This is a small wildcat called a Margay. It can be easy to confuse with an ocelot. One key difference is that their tail is longer than its hindlegs, unlike the ocelot where it is much shorter. Margays hunt their prey on the ground as well as in the trees. These guys can only grow to around 2 feet and live for around 20 years.
Central and South America
Margays are located anywhere from plantations to swamp fragments in the savanna but primarily are in tropical forests.
They are classified as a "near threatened" species due to the illegal wildlife trade in the 1990s. They were mainly hunted for their fur. What does not help their population growth is their reproduction rate. In total, the average Margay births only 5 children their whole life.
