UTSUWA 1.0 (Created in 2015)
Launched in Osaka in 2015, the UTSUWA Project expanded across borders to Berlin in 2020. Since then, we have continued to promote the value of traditional craftsmanship connecting Japan and Germany. Now, in our 10th year, we are honored to participate in EXPO 2025, held in Osaka. It is a great privilege to present our work once again in Japan, especially on such a prestigious global stage.
Launched in Osaka in 2015, the UTSUWA Project expanded across borders to Berlin in 2020. Since then, we have continued to promote the value of traditional craftsmanship connecting Japan and Germany. Now, in our 10th year, we are honored to participate in EXPO 2025, held in Osaka. It is a great privilege to present our work once again in Japan, especially on such a prestigious global stage.
We plan to participate twice in the fall. To suit each program, we will update UTSUWA 1.0 and unveil it as UTSUWA 1.1. This modular washitsu (traditional Japanese room), named UTSUWA—meaning "vessel"—uses high-quality Japanese materials and is assembled without nails or glue. Over the past ten years, it has been repeatedly assembled, disassembled, and relocated, and it is still going strong. We plan to give it a slight remake for this occasion and would love to showcase the process. The ease of replacing components and making minor repairs is another hallmark of excellent Japanese craftsmanship. The Utsuwa Project aims to share this sustainable craftsmanship with the world and for the future.
