Our goal with Puzzles & Potions was to create an easy pick-up & play game for our client and their siblings stuck at home during quarantine to distract them from the stress of school. The game will be played at a table for roughly an hour a week when they are overwhelmed. In terms of resources, the client has available a SparkFun Kit, arts & crafts materials, multiple card decks, a full Monopoly play set, and common household items. The client has a love for music, magic, and fantasy.
The game should implement a high risk, high reward method where the central theme is sabotage. Players should be able to play 3 or 4 rounds an hour without getting bored. While there may be competition, the focus of the game should revolve around players having fun together. The game should also include positive and negative reinforcement, to increase interaction and notify players of their progress. The game costs should not exceed $40. A long-term solution is desired.
Our team looked for an approach that would provide easy & simple fun, while also allowing for flexibility in how long the game takes place, so it can be played for a few minutes, or a few hours. We also took major considerations into the set-up of the game and its simplicity, making sure that everyone can get straight to the fun. Cost was a constraint we made sure to acknowledge, keeping the price reasonable for anyone, and not requiring much more beyond the basic components of an Arduino SparkFun Kit.
As part of its functions, this game must do the following:
Hold constant player engagement
Combine sense of competition with overall group enjoyment in a balanced manner
Support players as a stress-reliever when they feel overwhelmed
Sense player actions and respond with positive/negative reinforcement
Store player location on board and continuously check for a winner
Indicate a clear winner when a player has reached the end of the game first
As part of its objectives, this game must be like the following:
User-friendly
Low Cost
Aesthetic
Engaging
Our team determined the rank order of the above from most to least important to be as follows:
Low Cost
Engaging
User-Friendly
Aesthetic
As part of its constraints, this game must achieve the following criteria:
Be less than $40 all together to remain within client’s budget

Be compact enough to play on a table
Include client's interests in music, magic, and fantasy
