Learning by doing
This website is part of a business simulation game to learn English at C1 level created by the English On Academy of Astillero.
In the academy, we use task learning and believe in the concept of “learning by doing”.
Starting from a generic model with plenty of scope for personalisation, students must develop a task that reflects the real world. The assignments of each class compete with each other to make the experience interesting, although the gains and losses are always fictitious, so that in the end everything is but a game. However, the skills of organisation, planning, orderly thinking and especially language development in English, are totally real and will have a lasting effect on the level of English of the students.
Incidentally, students will learn a lot about how business organisations work. Also, they will improve their reasoning for decision making, both individually and in groups. The social component of the game will develop the leadership skills of students who are willing to take responsibility for the success or failure of their simulated company.
Unlike a normal class, the texts and materials that students produce in English are not directed only to the teacher who evaluates them, but to a real audience of students from our other schools and native volunteers who collaborate with English On academy.
The academy creates a series of fictitious companies that operate in different fields. At all times, the intention of the academy is for the game to be fun, but never be the centre of attention of the activity. Playing is a way to keep working and learning English.
On a weekly basis, students have to make business decisions in a meeting of the "board of directors" which is their class (English On groups are very small). Obviously, the entire meeting takes place in English.
The decisions of the students should be reflected in written documentation similar to that used by real companies. In addition, all the work done by the group is uploaded to the website of the fictitious company that the academy has created for the occasion.
As the development of the game is online, the same participating students and others from the three English On academies in Astillero can vote on the results through Google Forms.
