Theatre Management

A theatre manager, also known as a corporate manager, artistic director, is the leader of a theatre group. They most often have the same duties as an artistic director, but in fact, oversee all financial, marketing, creative, and administrative functions of the theatre group. Their job description includes planning and organizing the daily operation of the theatre. The theatre manager is responsible for the hiring of staff and for the supervision of theatre operations. They are also involved in negotiating contracts, firing people, conducting training, budgeting, and supervising the theatre's programming and advertising.

Theatre managers are also involved in the day to day operations of the theatre. This means they are involved with the hiring of employees and the supervision of their conduct. If the theatre wants to hire someone then they will seek an assessment from the theatre manager. A theatre manager must be able to organize the day to day activities of the theatre and make decisions concerning hiring, firing, and hiring and firing of people.

As part of their job, a theatre manager must be knowledgeable about scheduling of plays, musicals, movies, and other events. Scheduling is usually based on the profitability of the theatre as well as the number of people that are usually seen at the theatre. Most theatres use a complicated system of dates that include matinee times, off-peak times, peak times, off-peak evening times, night performances, weekend performances, traveling actors, and travelling musicals or shows. There must be some type of age discrimination policy in place for the theatre group. A theatre manager is responsible for coordinating travel plans for theatre groups.

An artistic manager coordinates the artistic vision of the theatre. This person is usually the artistic genius of the theatre group. The artistic manager must know each aspect of the theatre so he/she can properly plan each artistic production that is performed in the theatre. An artistic manager must be very organized and detail oriented.

Marketing is a term that describes the efforts of a theatre manager in order to promote the theatre that he/she owns. Marketing is one of the most important components of theatre management , because it is through marketing that a theatre gets the exposure it needs in order to attract more people to watch their productions. Theatre marketing is divided into two main categories: local and national theatre marketing. For local theatre marketing, a theatre manager focuses on promoting his theatre locally. For national theatre marketing, a theatre manager focuses on advertising his theatre nationally.

As part of theatre management, the theatre manager must work closely with his/her staff to find the most cost effective ways to produce their productions. The theatre manager must have a good eye for finding economical ways to produce a show. Theatre managers must be flexible and willing to learn new things about theatre promotion. Therefore, it is important that a theatre manager has a good command of the English language.
