If there’s one thing students dread, including myself, it’s a standardized test. These tests include material that is a culmination of everything learned throughout high school. These tests can seem complicated and stressful- but there are several tips and tricks that can be used use to improve or otherwise impact your score.
Use your resources! The College Board website releases SAT practice tests every year, which model the test you are about to take. I’d highly advise that you go ahead and print them, and do a trial run yourself. For the SAT, I’d also recommend going to Khan Academy, which is a website run by the College Board that personalizes tests and study materials to you, based on your scores on practice SAT tests. Start studying early! Cramming and procrastination typically do not work well for tests like these- more likely you’ll burn yourself out (trust me, I know.) Instead, consider creating a plan or routine a month or even a few in advance, a little bit of time spent studying every day can have a big difference!
Use testing tricks! I would recommend watching YouTube tutorials on how to solve problems quickly and correctly (these are especially helpful during the math portion)! As far other, more unique tricks, like staring at a red A or making a Superman pose in the mirror- well, it can’t hurt!
Know your score isn’t the “Be All End All”. At the end of the day, the outcome of standardized tests certainly doesn’t reflect all you have to offer- in general or in an academic sense. Colleges and potential employers are looking at much more than just this score- they’re looking at your grades, personality, story, experiences, passions, hobbies, aspirations, and much more. They’re looking at YOU, and everything you have to offer.
