PURPOSE: Students learn about various ancient female figures who were prominent in different areas (athletics, advocacy, divinity) while comparing them to modern women who excel in their own fields (athletics, government, advocacy). This activity is designed to spark creativity and critical thinking. The inspiration for this activity comes from the social media site Instagram.
TASK: Participants work individually, in pairs, or in groups (depending on supplies) to create a visual rendering of how a day spent between one ancient figure and one modern figure would transpire. Given time and supplies constraints, students could create a single Instagram post with a picture and a caption or a series of Stories or a number of posts with a single caption. Participants would finally present their work to the group to talk through their process, why they thought these two figures would get along best, and what they believed they might spend their day doing.
FACILITATOR ROLES: Present students with options for the ancient characters and modern role models {see below}, provide adequate supplies and a framework, and oversee the presentations.
NOTA BENE
In the original conception of this activity, our ancient characters were Themis, Demeter, Antigone, and Nike. Demeter does not appear in the supplementary workbook because she was featured in our program text Goddess Power (Yung In Chae, 2020). Similarly, Hygeia does appear in the workbook because of a separate activity. Finally, the 'Contributors' information is current as of the completion of the book, not up to date as of now.
Choose ancient figures and modern parallels based on larger program goals, the identity of the participants, current events, etc.
