Studies show that an empowerment-based system of self-defense is more effective in reducing sexual violence. Some martial arts schools and systems taught by police officers predominantly focus on the danger posed by strangers. Typical programs suggest locking doors, trimming hedges and other preventative measures, as well as focusing mainly on the physical aspects of defending oneself. Empowerment self-defense (ESD) teaches individuals to trust their instincts and verbalize their needs, as well as having the right to stand up for ourselves and use physical defense techniques when necessary. Yes, you should consider keeping your doors locked when the situation is warranted, but you should not be fearful in your everyday life. We understand that over 75% of sexual violence is committed by someone known to the victim. We start with the basics of feeling embarrassed, not wanting to hurt the other person's feelings, etc.
At Empowered Self-defense, we give all our students "Concepts to Remember" as well as resources and information on domestic violence and sexual assault counseling, local SANE hospitals, etc. We share our stories and support each other. We take a holistic approach to boundary enforcement because we truly care about your overall wellbeing.
