Unlocking Your Smile's Potential: Where Artistry Meets Dentistry.
Looking to add a sparkle to your smile? Cosmetic dentistry is the answer to it!
Tooth jewellery has been trending among the youths of today. Individuals are exploring unique ways to express their style and character through their smiles. It’s a simple procedure with no pain but a lot of gain as there is no damage to the tooth. The best part to this? Hardly any drillings are done!
Most common types oral jewellery are:
Tooth Gems:
Also called dental gems or rainbow-coloured crystals as they come in different colours. They are glass crystals mounted on a thin aluminium foil to create an attractive spark. These gems are the least expensive version of tooth jewellery (Bhatia et al., 2015).
Twinkles:
Twinkles are oral jewellery made of pure gold and precious stones like diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. They also come in different shapes, such as diamond, star, triangle, heart, drop, and round (Bhatia et al., 2015).
Tooth tattoos/Tooth ink:
Tooth tattoos are an excellent option for those looking to showcase their individuality subtly yet strikingly. Designs like hearts, symbols, and patterns are carved onto ceramic crowns using dental-grade ink. However, it is an indirect procedure; tooth reduction is required to make the crown. A tooth tattoo is also easily removed by grinding the image of the tooth crown (Bhatia et al., 2015).
Dental Grills:
A grill is a form of removable tooth jewellery that comes in metal forms like gold and encrusted diamonds, making it more attractive. It is a sign of status symbol and is very popular in the world of hip-hop (Bhatia et al., 2015).
Transforming imperfections into perfection!
In addition to tooth jewellery, dental veneers also play an important role in aesthetics. They are mainly used when an individual has a discoloured, chipped or unevenly shaped tooth with gaps.
There are two types mainly:
Porcelain/Ceramic veneers:
They are stronger than composite
They are more harmful to the original tooth structure
They are harder to repair (Ozcan et al., 2020)
Composite resin veneers:
They are more affordable
They are less harmful to the original tooth structure
They are easily repaired (Ozcan et al., 2020)
What to know before you get tooth jewlery?
A few things that need to be kept in mind before a procedure are:
Plaque Accumulation:
Although they do not interfere with oral hygiene maintenance, plaque can accumulate if composite resin margins are not polished (Kaur, 2022).
Tooth Decay:
Improper application or removal of tooth gems and tattoos can damage to the tooth enamel and cause decay (Bhatia et al., 2015).
Swallowing/Aspiration:
Tooth jewellery may become deboned if more stress is applied at the bonding interface due to hard brushing or eating sticky and hard foods, thereby leading to choking (Kaur, 2022).
We can see now that prioritizing dental aesthetics goes beyond appearance. It is a means to boost self-confidence and individuality. Who wouldn't like a bejewelled smile in a world full of plain old white teeth?
Let’s not forget that our smile is our best-known accessory, so why not make it shine?
